The Arctic Council in Transition: Nordic to North American Leadership SIPRI Workshop in Stockholm, November 29, 2012

Officials and experts from Arctic and non-Arctic countries met to discuss the lessons learned during Sweden’s Arctic Council chairmanship, as well as expectations for the incoming chair, Canada. Steffen Weber, the Secretary General at the Arctic Forum Foundation, contributed to the workshop as a speaker. Participants discussed the situation of indigenous peoples, the role of industry in the Arctic, environmental issues, the question of observer status in the Arctic Council and the role of the Council in the region’s security governance. Focus on the Arctic at the ECPR, Tampere, 13-15 September 2012

The European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) Standing Group on the EU organized its 6th Pan-European Conference in Tampere, last fall. A panel was dedicated to the Arctic in the section on EU Foreign Policy and external Relations: “EU and Arctic: policy framework, challenges and perspectives”. Cécile Pelaudeix, lecturer at Sciences Po Lyon, and research associate at AFF, presented a paper in the Arctic panel. Read more…

The Residence Palace in Brussels hosted the September 17thpanel discussion “Offshore Oil and Gas: Which Path to Improving Safety?” conducted by the innovative media partnership/opinion forum CommentVisions. The forum’s Community Manager Robert Zlowkower interviewed Arctic Forum Foundation’s Secretary General Steffen Weber to obtain his viewpoint, as an Arctic specialist, on the direction and scope of recently proposed EU offshore oil and gas safety regulations.
