Future challenges and opportunities in the Arctic discussed during the high-level conference – Arctic Future Symposium 2012

No race for resources, a need to adapt to climate change and a call for more cooperation in the Arctic were some of the conclusions of the Arctic Futures Symposium 2012. The conference took place in Brussels on the 4th & 5th October and was the third annual conference organised by the International Polar Foundation in partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. The conference gathered leading researches and experts, policymakers, Ambassadors and government representatives from the EU and Arctic nations, Arctic indigenous peoples and industry representatives. The delimitation process in the Central Arctic Seabed: Sovereign rights or a condominium or res communis omnium?

This paper focuses briefly on the positions and practices of the Arctic coastal States within the ongoing process of delineation of the outer limits of their continental shelves in the Arctic seabed. Namely, it particularly takes into account the seabed under the North Pole (the Lomonosov ridge) rich with energy resources which stretch across the Arctic Ocean and separate the Amerasian Basin from the Eurasian Basin. The Arctic Council in Transition: Nordic to North American Leadership SIPRI Workshop in Stockholm, November 29, 2012

Officials and experts from Arctic and non-Arctic countries met to discuss the lessons learned during Sweden’s Arctic Council chairmanship, as well as expectations for the incoming chair, Canada. Steffen Weber, the Secretary General at the Arctic Forum Foundation, contributed to the workshop as a speaker. Participants discussed the situation of indigenous peoples, the role of industry in the Arctic, environmental issues, the question of observer status in the Arctic Council and the role of the Council in the region’s security governance.
