Investment in the Arctic Region on the Agenda at the Arctic Region Oil and Gas Conference

The Arctic Region Oil & Gas Conference took place on 26 – 27 February 2013 at the Clarion Hotel in Stavanger, Norway. Steffen Weber, Secretary General of the Arctic Forum Foundation, participated as a speaker at the conference. The two-day event attracted regional and international oil and gas industry professionals, with 43 speakers presenting to 109 attendees from nine countries.

The Arctic Region Oil & Gas Conference commenced with an overview of Arctic resource activities, geopolitical assessment and investment attractiveness of the region in an open speaker panel. Knut Ørbeck‐Nilssen, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, DNV continued by highlighting carbon concerns from energy projects and the need to implement standardised risk levels to prevent accidents occurring in the Arctic.

This was followed by discussions on improving operational risk and drilling, well construction and production infrastructure from companies in Norway, Russia, US and Canada, including Lloyd’s Register, FMC Technologies, INTECSEA, Aker Solutions, plus many others. Chevron Arctic Centre also presented updates from their latest evacuation craft design programme.
Day two continued with subsea technologies discussions. John Bartos, Vice President, Development and Technology, Cameron outlined the company’s best practices for safe subsea operations. A highlight was the regional updates from Arctic states presented by Denis Khramov, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, for the Russian Federation who discussed the state policy of the Russian Federation for Arctic continental shelf exploration and development. SINTEF also provided the latest results from industry joint programmes on oil spill contingency and response, whilst Rosatomflot presented icebreaker roles and supply for Arctic projects.

The conference concluded with a roundtable discussion led by LUKOIL Overseas North Shelf who evaluated technologies designed to reduce impact on the Arctic environment.

The 3rd Arctic Region Oil & Gas Conference will take place on 25 – 26 February 2014 at the Clarion Hotel in Stavanger, Norway.
